But it usually stops one step short of the question that matters:

Where is that income supposed to come from?

Guaranteed lifetime income is income designed to continue for as long as you live, subject to the terms and guarantees of the source providing it. Notice the word “source.” Guaranteed lifetime income is not a single product you buy. It’s an outcome, and it can come from more than one place.

That distinction matters, because the moment people hear “guaranteed lifetime income,” many of them think one word: annuity.

Annuities are part of the conversation. But they are not the whole of it, and starting there skips past sources of guaranteed income many retirees already have.

Three Sources, Not One

For most retirees, guaranteed lifetime income comes from as many as three places. They are not interchangeable, and understanding how they differ is the beginning of knowing where your income will actually come from.

Social Security: the income you already have

For most American retirees, Social Security is the foundation of guaranteed lifetime income. It continues for life, it adjusts for inflation under current law, and it is backed by the federal government rather than a market.

For most retirees, the question is not whether Social Security belongs in the income floor, but when to claim it and how that decision affects the amount, including survivor income for a spouse. It is guaranteed lifetime income you already hav, and the planning question is how to make the most of it.

A pension: an employer’s promise

Traditional pensions have become less common in the private sector, but many retirees still receive pension income from a former employer, union or government system.

A pension is a promise made by an institution to pay you, usually for life. Like Social Security, it’s income you receive rather than income you construct. And like Social Security, it comes with decisions that matter, particularly the survivor election, where a married couple chooses how much income should continue to the surviving spouse. It’s income you already have, but the shape of it is not always fixed.

An annuity: the source you can create

Here is where the third source is genuinely different from the first two.

You cannot go out and buy more Social Security. You cannot purchase a pension. But if Social Security and a pension don’t add up to as much guaranteed lifetime income as a household wants, an annuity is the one source of the three that can be deliberately created to fill the difference.

And this is the fact that quietly shapes the entire retirement income conversation: an annuity is an insurance contract. Certain annuities can provide income that cannot be outlived, backed by the financial strength and claims-paying ability of the issuing insurance company. That guarantee is an insurance guarantee, and the mechanism behind it exists only inside an insurance contract. Creating it is an insurance transaction. We’ll come back to why that matters.

First, a word about what guaranteed lifetime income is not.

Guaranteed Income Is Not a Portfolio Withdrawal

Suppose you have a retirement portfolio and decide to withdraw a set amount each month. That’s retirement income. But the decision to withdraw does not make that income guaranteed for life. A portfolio remains exposed to investment performance, withdrawal rates, inflation, taxes and longevity, and a market decline early in retirement, while withdrawals are being taken, can do lasting damage.

How much guaranteed income a household actually needs, and how to measure the gap between essential expenses and the income that’s already dependable, is the subject of a separate article, The Income Floor. This article assumes you’ve found a gap and asks the next question: where does the income to fill it come from?

For many households the answer is some combination of the three sources above. And once an annuity enters the picture, so does a question people don’t always know to ask.

Who Belongs in This Conversation?

Retirement income rarely fits neatly inside a single professional discipline.

Investments affect growth and portfolio withdrawals. Social Security and pensions provide income, with claiming and survivor decisions attached. Insurance can transfer longevity risk and create contractual lifetime income. Taxes affect what you actually keep. Medicare affects healthcare costs. Long-term care can change the entire financial picture later in life. Estate and legal decisions determine how assets are owned and transferred.

No single product addresses all of that, and no single professional necessarily handles all of it.

This is where the insurance-contract fact earns its keep. Because guaranteed lifetime income products such as annuities are insurance contracts, a properly licensed independent insurance professional is directly relevant to that part of the plan, in the same way an investment adviser is relevant to the portfolio, a CPA to the tax picture, and an attorney to the estate documents. Depending on what a household in Nashville or the surrounding Middle Tennessee area needs, the conversation may appropriately include several of them.

The objective isn’t to decide which profession “owns” retirement. It’s to identify the needs first, then determine which expertise and tools belong in the solution.

Structure follows objectives. Products follow structure.

What About Commissions and Conflicts of Interest?

Once more than one kind of professional is in the room, a fair question follows: how is each of them paid, and how does that affect what they recommend?

It’s a legitimate question, and it deserves a consistent answer.

Insurance professionals are often compensated through commissions paid by the insurance company. Investment advisers are frequently compensated through a percentage of the assets they manage. Others charge hourly, flat or planning fees. Some practices use more than one of these.

Every one of those structures can create incentives. A commission can create an incentive to place a policy. An assets-under-management fee can create an incentive to keep assets in the portfolio rather than using a portion to secure guaranteed income. Neither compensation structure is inherently honest or inherently suspect.

What actually protects a client is the same in every case: Is the compensation disclosed? Is the recommendation suitable? Were alternatives considered? Does the proposed solution address the problem it’s supposed to solve? A retirement income recommendation should be able to stand on its own merits regardless of how the professional making it is paid.

Start With the Need, Not the Product

Guaranteed lifetime income isn’t one product, and it isn’t one profession’s territory.

Social Security may provide part of it. A pension may provide another part. An annuity may fill the difference when additional contractual lifetime income is genuinely needed. Investments then do the jobs they’re well suited for: growth, liquidity, inflation protection, discretionary spending and legacy.

That kind of plan doesn’t require one professional to be wrong for another to be relevant. An investment adviser may recognize that a client has insurance needs an investment-only relationship doesn’t cover, while an insurance professional should recognize where portfolio management, tax advice and legal work belong with other professionals. Each discipline has a role, and the client benefits when those roles work together. That is why retirement income deserves its own discipline alongside investment management, not in place of it.

For retirees and pre-retirees in Nashville and throughout Middle Tennessee, the more useful starting question isn’t “which product should I buy?” It’s:

Do I know my number, and where will that income come from?

Identify the need. Take inventory of the guaranteed income you already have. Decide how much of the remaining gap you want protected for life. Then determine which tools and which professionals belong in the solution.

Kurtz Lytle is the founder of IUL.Solutions, an independent insurance and retirement income practice based in Nashville, TN.
